The Fry Family’s session at The Antique Rose Emporium was the perfect example of why I love photographing young families in this setting!  Their toddler was full of curiosity and excitement, exploring the gardens and taking in everything around him. Rather than forcing poses, we embraced those moments. Some of my favorite images came from simply letting her lead the way while mom and dad joined in.

Their dog also came along for the session, which added another layer of personality to the gallery. Family pets are such an important part of many families’ stories, and I always love when they’re included.

Tips for Family Photos with a Toddler

One of the questions I hear most often before family sessions is whether toddlers will cooperate. The good news is that they don’t need to be perfectly behaved for beautiful photos!

1. Let Go of Perfect

The best family photos rarely come from everyone looking directly at the camera and smiling perfectly. Often, the images families love most are the ones filled with laughter, movement, and genuine emotion.

2. Let Your Child Explore

Toddlers are naturally curious. Giving them space to walk, play, and discover their surroundings often leads to more authentic interactions and happier expressions.

3. Bring a Few Simple Snacks

A quick snack break can make a big difference during a family session. Simple, non-messy options are usually best and can help keep little ones happy and energized.

• Bring water, especially during warmer months.
• Consider bringing a family member or friend who can help when your dog is not actively being photographed.
