Choosing your wedding photographer is about more than finding a portfolio you love. You’re trusting this person to document some of the most meaningful parts of your wedding day, while also spending a large portion of the day alongside you and your closest people. As a College Station wedding photographer, I encourage couples to look beyond Instagram when making this decision. Ask questions, look at full galleries, and pay attention to how a photographer communicates with you from the very beginning. Luke and Leah’s images at The Weinberg at Wixon Valley are a beautiful example of the kind of variety and intentional coverage you should expect from a complete wedding gallery.

Here are some of the questions I recommend asking before you officially book!

Experience & Photography Style

Start by making sure you understand who you’re hiring and what you can expect from their work.

  • How would you describe your photography and editing style?
  • How long have you been photographing weddings?
  • How many weddings have you photographed?
  • Have you photographed weddings similar to ours?
  • Can we see a few full wedding galleries rather than just Instagram highlights?
  • Do you personally photograph our wedding, or will an associate?

A photographer’s Instagram shows you their favorite images. A full gallery shows you how they approach an entire wedding, from getting ready through the reception.

Coverage & Planning

Your photographer should understand more than how to take beautiful photographs. They should also know how to help your day flow.

Ask:

  • How many hours of coverage do you recommend for our timeline?
  • What is included in your wedding collections?
  • Do you include an engagement session?
  • Do you help create the photography timeline?
  • Do you bring a second photographer?
  • How do you approach posed portraits versus candid moments?
  • How do you handle family photos and large group portraits?

The amount of coverage you need will depend on your plans for the day. I wrote more about that in How Much Wedding Photography Coverage Do You Need?.

A second photographer can also be valuable for larger weddings or timelines with a lot happening at once. You can learn more about that in What a Second Photographer Adds to Your Wedding Day.

Backup Plans & Peace of Mind

This part may not be as exciting as choosing your engagement session location, but it matters.

Ask your photographer:

  • How do you handle difficult lighting, rain, or unexpected timeline changes?
  • Do you carry backup cameras, lenses, lighting, and other equipment?
  • What happens if you are sick or have an emergency?
  • Are you insured?
  • How many images can we typically expect?
  • When will we receive sneak peeks and our full gallery?
  • How are our images delivered, and how long are they backed up?

A professional photographer should have clear systems in place for the unexpected. Your wedding day only happens once, so knowing how your photographer protects your images can give you important peace of mind.

Albums, Prints & Your Finished Images

Think beyond the wedding gallery when you’re comparing photographers.

Ask whether they offer:

  • Printing rights
  • Albums and prints
  • Film or Super 8
  • Content creation
  • Other ways to preserve and enjoy your photographs

If you’re interested in bridal portraits, this is also a good time to ask whether your photographer offers them as part of their experience. You can read more about why I love bridal sessions in Why Bridal Portraits Are Worth It.

What Does It Take to Officially Book A College Station Wedding Photographer?

Before signing a contract, make sure you understand the investment and booking process.

Ask about travel fees, additional costs, payment schedules, and what is required to officially reserve your date. Everything should be clearly outlined in your contract before you move forward.

And then there is one final question that may be the most important: Do we actually click with this person? Your photographer is one of the vendors you’ll spend the most time with on your wedding day. You want someone whose presence feels comfortable and whose approach you trust.

Ultimately, you’re trying to answer three things: Do I love their work? Do I trust them? Do I want this person around me for 8–12 hours on one of the biggest days of my life?

Finding the right photographer takes more than scrolling through a portfolio. Take your time, ask questions, look at complete galleries, and pay attention to how the photographer makes you feel throughout the process.
